I recently came back from a trip overseas. I love traveling, but there is no place I’d rather call home than the United States. As I talk to people in other countries, I notice a distinct and passive acceptance of things that negatively impact their lives and their country. One Brit shared his amazement at American’s optimism and high confidence: “You Americans really think you can do anything! Your wealth gives you that”.
He was mistaken. Wealth is just one possible benefit, not the true source of our optimism and confidence. Our society is built on the freedom and right of each individual to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness”. We are confident and optimistic and personally wealthier than many around the world because we celebrate and support individual power and freedom.
This fundamental freedom benefits every aspect of life. As other countries are struggling with calcified economies, poor services, corrupt bureaucracies and personal powerlessness, we can be immensely grateful and celebrate our success. Here is a just a taste of the freedoms built into every layer of our society:
- An open and innovative economy that provides opportunity for all
- Entrepreneurial ease to pursue goals and succeed
- Honest dealings in private and public life as the norm
- Quality public and private services
- Overall safety in our communities and across the country
- A high standard of living
- Abundant and high quality goods
- Freedom to speak and practice all our beliefs and values
Visiting other countries reminds me of privileges we have in abundance. Though we are currently experiencing our own challenges we have the foundation that empowers each of us to succeed. Let us celebrate it, guard it and thank all those who sacrifice to keep us free!
