This week I was on the east coast with colleagues teaching Coaching Skills to leaders of a major wire-house, an initiative that has been going on for several months. This has been a challenge for the group. Like many in the industry they’re overwhelmed with daily urgency’s. They need business results and they need them now! Who has time to stop and learn fluffy relationship skills? Fortunately they have a committed leader who’s invested in this team’s development – bravo for this leader! It has given everyone the time and the accountability to keep at it.
At first, many were skeptical of the value but most were willing to give it a sincere effort. Now, they are convinced and committed! What changed? Business results. They are finding that good coaching skills are moving the dial on the dollars in a profound way. Advisors who were stuck in a rut are making significant and productive changes – all with enthusiasm and drive! It’s fantastic!
So how does this story relate to women clients? Reaching women clients effectively is a change in relationships skills. It may be hard to see how relationship skills will impact the bottom line and the skills will not develop overnight. Also, like you, these leaders have lots to do. Yet they’ve acquired significant skill – while doing all the rest. Rest assured, these skills can be learned a little at a time. You do not have to stop your practice to do this. Just make a little room for it, fold it in and keep going. Those who do, will see real business results.
Fact of the Day
Learning research shows that people go through stages of confidence when building skills. New learners are naively overconfident in their ability. They can’t see their large skill gap. As people become more skilled they actually lose confidence. At this stage they’re too aware of their weaknesses. As skills strengthen they can realistically assess both strengths and weaknesses and finally people build to confident mastery.
Tip of the Day
Where are you in learning good relationship skills? If you’re feeling unsure and unskilled, take heart! You’re probably a lot farther along than peers who display arrogant confidence. Keep going you will reap personal and business rewards.
